CHS

 

Structure is very important for writing.

 

Paragraph:

Describe

 

I.                Topic sentence – not too long, not too short, and it has to grab the reader's attention. Not boring. Somewhat special and different than everyday.

II.            Physical appearance – help the reader create a mental picture of your friend. Use the reader's imagination
focus on character – specific things, hobbies, interests
how you interact with that person. What is your connection.

III.       Conclusion: summary. Paraphrase what you said.
here – say what you think and how you feel about this person.  

 

Always start with a prewrite: brainstorm ideas for 2 minutes.

How to study for improvement:

1.   Check how much you know

2.   It is better someone else to correct your mistakes.

3.   Repeat out loud the correct way a few times

4.   Copy 10 times your mistakes to gain mechanical memory.

5.   Recheck how much you have improved.

 

 

Past Tense (continued):

1.   Questions

Use "did"

What did you do? I studied at the library. I didn't study at the library.
Where did you go? I went to the gym. I didn't go to the gym

Who did you see? I saw my friend. I didn't see my friend.

 

Compare with present simple:

Where does he go? He goes to work.

 

Time flies by.

When did you drive for the first time?

Did you get married in Bulgaria?

How many cars did you buy?

I met her at a bridge tournament.

 

Negatives:

Didn't do.

 

We finish the class with a party.

Homework:

What did you do last weekend? Write a short story of 5 sentences.

Past Tense

Additional information: the action finished in the past. We are talking about past moment.

 

I have seen Star Wars. – perfect tense: in the present, I know about this movie. We don't care when I saw it.

 

I saw Star Wars when I was in 5th grade. Past moment.

 

Words and expressions for past tense

Yesterday, last year, when I was….

Story from your own experience…

 

Have you been in trouble? – information about the present.  You say "yes" or "no"

 

If you want to say when it happened, use past tense. – information about the past.
